"You really have
to work hard and apply yourself, and by applying yourself and working hard and
being diligent, you can achieve success." - Julie Benz.
There are lots of factors responsible for success in life: dreaming big, setting goals, following your dreams, determination, self-confidence, discipline, and so on. All these factors must come into place
before anyone can achieve success. However, there is one factor which is
central to attaining success and upon which the effectiveness of the other
factors depends; and that is diligence.
Diligence, according to dictionary.com, is a constant and earnest effort to accomplish what is undertaken. In other words, it is a consistent and continuous effort which a person must deliberately put into whatever he or she does in order to have a great result. It, therefore, suffices to say that no meaningful accomplishment can be made without diligence; and that is particularly true, as the huge role diligence play can be clearly seen in the world of science, business, academics, sports, and any other human endeavor that one can think of. Antiphanes sums this up when he stated that "everything yields to diligence."
Having said that, I must say that diligence does more than just helping to accomplish an undertaken. There are other benefits that you, my reader, as an individual, can gain from being diligent, and that is what this post will do justice to; as I shall discuss below seven things that being diligent does for you.
1. It instills discipline
When you consistently put an earnest effort into the things
you do, hard work becomes a part of you and it manifests at every point in
time. That is, no matter the task at hand, its turnaround time, or the
convenience of the period, you would always give it your best. This helps you
to lead a life devoid of laziness and untenable excuses.
2. You become resourceful
Being diligent in all you do makes you a better manager of
time and resources. This is very important because there are only 24 hours in a
day, and you certainly cannot spend all the hours working - you'd usually have
between 8-14 hours to do whatever you have to do - which makes a lot of people
complain about not being able to achieve their daily goals. However, that is
usually not the case with a diligent person, as (s) he would have mastered how
to manage time.
Also, when diligence becomes a part of you, you become an
effective manager of resources. While others are complaining about not being
able to work with the little resources at their disposal, you would see
yourself getting the task done with the same amount of resources. Likewise,
when resources are in abundance, a diligent person would have learned how to
efficiently make use of them, thereby avoiding wastage, and having a reserve of
resources.
3. It put the spotlight on you
Diligence draws attention more than you can ever imagine.
When you are diligent, you become noticed by people wherever you go. Never make
the mistake of thinking that people are not watching you and the things you do
- that no one seems to say a thing to you does not mean that they are not
looking at you with keen interest, as diligence is a virtue that is admired by
all. With time, everyone will begin to appreciate your effort.
4. It opens doors
With spotlight and appreciation come new opportunities.
People who have seen how diligent you are would naturally begin to not only
give you new opportunities to work for them, but would also introduce you to
others, who will also do the same thing. In that way, doors of opportunities
would be opening to you consistently, and you will be able to build
relationships and have vital connections that you can always rely on in times
of need.
5. It brings riches
An indisputable effect of getting attention and new
opportunities is that you become wealthy. Once you begin to meet the needs of
people by diligently offering valuable services, then your effort will begin to
bring in money for you. The more needs you meet, the more the money you make;
and that is where your diligence would greatly be of help, as you won't be lazy
when it comes to meeting the needs that would be coming with new opportunities.
6. You will be able to impact lives
Making an impact in the life of others is a sure way to
leave your footprints on the sands of time. A diligent person can effectively
use his or her time, energy, money, and other resources, to touch the lives of
people around as well as those far away and still have enough to cater for his
or her family. Such are the type of people whose names and works remain
relevant long after they have died, and they continually serve as role models
to unborn generations.
7. It leads to fulfillment
Of what use is a life lived without a sense of fulfillment?
Such a life, in my opinion, is nothing but a waste. However, a fulfilled life
cannot come just on its own; it is birthed when you discover your purpose, and
then fulfill that purpose through diligence. Any other thing apart from that,
no matter how good it may look, is nothing but a waste of time. Tony Robbins
rightly put this when he said that "success without fulfillment is a
failure."
With that, we come to the end of this post. There is certainly no substitute for hard work. Make it a point of duty to be diligent at all times and see your dreams come through.
